FSCJ to Receive $1.52 Million for Construction Education and Training as Part of Disaster Recovery Efforts

Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) is to receive $1.52 million from the state to be put towards general construction trades education and training. This is part of a larger effort that will see $14 million awarded to local workforce development boards, schools and colleges, and communities that were affected by Hurricane Irma in 2017. The Need for Skilled Workers  

FSCJ is one of seven organizations to receive an award through the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity’s (DEO) Rebuild Florida Workforce Recovery Training Program. As stated on FSCJ’s website, funds were requested to help meet the “need for skilled workers in the associated construction trades who can work to assist in this recovery need.” The college’s proposed construction workforce training program aims to train 300 low-income residents.

A Part of Larger Efforts 

“Homes, businesses and communities across the state are still recovering from Hurricane Irma,” said Governor Ron Desantis. “The award recipients will help individuals across the state not only learn skills they need to repair homes and infrastructure but create a new life for themselves and their families.” These awards will help train Floridians in numerous construction trades, including roofing, HVAC, electricity, and heavy equipment operations, just to name a few. This is incredible news for an industry plagued by labor shortages and for communities recovering from Hurricane Irma.

Overcoming the Skilled Labor Shortage 

As we’ve covered previously, construction companies are exploring novel ways to attract workers to the construction industry, including visiting high schools, community colleges, and vocational centers. But despite these efforts, companies are still finding it difficult to find bodies for skilled positions. Investing in education and training programs will fulfill a growing need in the industry.
